The Workshop utilizes a ball balancing table to demonstrate this transition away from a traditional physics- based approach. It builds the basis of a project-based learning class that let students explore the possibilities and limitations that arises with data science.
The new approach will be introduced in the context of different approaches of modern control design:
* The simulation-based approach uses digital twins of various complexities: linear, nonlinear and full 3D based twins - which can be replaces by the real system finally.
* The data scienced based approach uses a short set of data to teach an AI based identification of the dynamic system. The results will lead in a control configuration that can be applied on the real system directly.
A straight comparison of flexibility, stability and performance demonstrates the power of AI based control design.

Session Chair:
Dr. Peter Shull, Penn State University, United States of America
Prof. Clara Perez, UNED, Spain
This workshop will provide participants with clarity on what is meant by taking responsibility, specific methods to determine if one is taking responsibility, and clear, simple methodologies to train students in how to take responsibility for their own learning. These methods can be integrated into any class without loss of learning of the class subject matter. (Note, to increase student and faculty buy in, the methods rely on common engineering tools such as the engineering design process—although here it is used as a meta-cognitive learning tool). Opening
- Introduction of the presenter and his journey.
- Guided Activity—What’s your situation and why it doesn’t change! Yet there is hope and it comes from students acting like college students but in a new way.
B. Developing a common sense of responsibility - What is student responsibility?
- Activity—audience creating and presenting a skit that demonstrates the basic and common fundamentals of responsibility. The skit emulates faculty’s impressions of student behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes—typically quite hilarious yet enlightening.
- Summarizing and creating a common vocabulary.
C. Developing a common picture of what happens when students are not taking responsibility: - What is meant when we say students are not being responsible?
- Activity—audience creating and presenting a skit that demonstrates the basic and common fundamentals of a lack of responsibility.
- Summarizing and creating a common vocabulary. D. Creating a clear picture:
- The audience will synthesize the information in the previous 2 segments and create a clear picture of student responsibility verses lack of responsibility.
E. Introducing the specifics of the method: - All the methods are solidly grounded in engineering tools that are commonly taught and used in engineering education. This helps create buy-in from students and engineering faculty. 2) The methods require little class time for instruction.
F. Practicing what you preach and understanding the subtleties of the method: - The audience will practice utilizing their learning in simulated scenario and present experiences.
- Issues and clarifications will be addressed.
- Practical implementation elements will be detailed and practiced.
- Specific details on full implementation will be presented. G. Developing Lessons:
- The audience will explore their own particular issues and opportunities for implementation at their school.
H. Post workshop support: - Support for participants implementing the methods will be provided.

Dr. Blanca Quintana, UNED, Spain
The electrification megatrend is driving the replacement of less efficient technologies and helping us achieve a more sustainable future. With the switch to power electronics, batteries and electric machines of all sizes, it has become commonplace to deploy more and more embedded devices to control them. At the same time, with more access to data and computing power than ever before, machine learning is providing us with new ways to develop algorithms. When combined with ever more electronic and more programmable machines, we are facing the opportunity and the challenge to build increasingly autonomous systems.
How can engineers architect such complex systems, iterate quickly and validate their designs along the way? For many companies across industries, from renewable energies to mechatronics or transportation, the answer is Model-Based Design. In this presentation, we will look at how they are leveraging MATLAB® and domain-specific tools, with Simulink® as an integration platform to model multi-domain systems, validate their behavior and deploy code for them.
With such convergence of mechanics, electronics and software, how must the skills of future engineers evolve?

Join Sorabh Bajaj, Skills Transformation Consultant, to discover how to leverage Coursera’s SkillSets and Guided Projects to help engineering students develop in-demand career skills. In this workshop, you will also learn about models of integrating e-learning in the student journey. Keywords—digital skills, engineering projects, e-learning, students
WS1254: Remote Laboratories for Electronics and Digital Design by LabsLand
THURSDAY, 18th | 12:00-13:30 ROOM A Humanities Faculty Floor -1
Session Chair:
Dr. Luis Rodríguez-Gil, LabsLand, Spain Jose Luis Moya, LabsLand, Spain
Dr. Javier García-Zubía, University of Deusto, Spain
Prof. Clara Perez, UNED, Spain
The current pandemic and changing trends in education are increasing the need for flexibility and for more practical classroom experience in an online mode of teaching. This is especially important when it comes to engineering education, for which practices are critical. LabsLand helps educators by making this transition as smooth as possible. The purpose of this session is to familiarize engineering educators with remote laboratory technologies and with popular remote laboratories. During the workshop, we will introduce those technologies. Then we will briefly describe two of the most popular remote laboratories used in universities around the world: For FPGA devices and for general electronics. Participants will then have the chance to experiment with those laboratories themselves through specific guided practice sessions. Focus will be put into the practical application of those laboratories to engineering courses. Participants will also be provided with a no-charge time-limited access to the labs so that they may continue trying and practicing with them after the workshop.
